Accessing the Pages Panel
Before diving into the color change itself, you need to access the “Pages” panel. This panel is where you manage all the pages within your InDesign document. If you don’t see it on your workspace, simply go to “Window” in the top menu bar and select “Pages.”
Two Ways to Change Page Color
InDesign offers two primary methods for changing page color, both equally straightforward:
1. Using the Swatches Panel
- Open the “Swatches” panel: Navigate to “Window” in the menu bar and select “Color” > “Swatches.”
- Choose your color: Select the desired color from your existing swatches. If you need a specific color, you can create a new swatch by clicking the “New Swatch” button in the panel’s options menu.
- Apply to the page: Within the “Pages” panel, select the page thumbnail you want to modify.
- Click the desired color swatch: The page thumbnail’s background will reflect the new color, instantly updating your document.

2. Directly Applying Color to the Page
- Select the page: In the “Pages” panel, click the thumbnail of the page you want to adjust.
- Double-click the page thumbnail: This opens the “Page Attributes” dialog box.
- Choose your color: Under the “Background” section, you have several options:
- Paper: This retains the default paper color, usually white.
- Transparent: This makes the page background transparent, allowing elements on underlying pages or the pasteboard to show through.
- Color: This option allows you to select a specific color for your page background. Click the color box next to it and choose your desired hue from the color picker.
- Click “OK”: Your selected color will be applied to the page background.

Tips for Effective Page Color Changes
- Consider your content: When choosing a page color, keep in mind the content that will be placed on it. Ensure there’s enough contrast between the text, images, and the background for optimal readability.
- Maintain consistency: If you’re working on a multi-page document, like a magazine or a brochure, decide on a consistent color palette for your pages. This helps in creating a visually harmonious and professional look.
- Experiment with transparency: Don’t be afraid to experiment with transparent page backgrounds, especially if you’re aiming for a layered or unique design.
- Preview your work: Before finalizing your document, always preview your work to see how the page color looks in the context of your overall design.
By mastering these simple techniques, you can confidently manipulate page color within Adobe InDesign to create visually engaging and professionally designed documents.
